WRITING A THANK YOU NOTE

I happened to see a sample of President Obama's thank you note "etiquette" on a Twitter post today, and began thinking about this almost obsolete nicety.

Do you write thank you notes? I mean, do you actually take out pen and paper and write a real note? When? After you have received a gift? What about after a dinner party? Or an interview?
Or.... gasp.... to say hello and thank someone for a small gesture?

Here's something to think about:

From JobSearch site: "Account Temps Survey reported that 88% of executives said they consider a thank you note influential when evaluating candidates." More prefer hand written to email and many recommended doing both.

I was brought up in the age of pen and paper and thank you notes were 'de rigeur'. Always. No exceptions.

It doesn't matter what your handwriting is like; no, it's the act of writing... of taking the time to
  t h i n k ... that is important here.

And there are SO MANY great designs in cards to choose from.

Some on-line stores that I like:
TinyPrints
InvitationBox
FineStationary
PaperFancy

These are some of my personal favorites from PaperSource

To get you started (!!!) here is a great site with actual samples of all kinds of thank yous.

I finished up my Christmas thank you notes using these cards

There is something so satisfying about writing... and receiving... a hand written note.

  1. I do write thank you's although (unfortunately) it often takes me awhile. I agree it's important and a dying protocol.

  2. I do write thank you notes, as I believe it's even more relevant in today's high tech world. I love collecting pretty note cards. I keep them in a fabric covered box with a pen and stamps.... ready to jot a quick personal note. You don't have to leave your house....simply put it in your mailbox for the postman to pick up. Now where else can you get door-to-door delivery service for only forty five cents??? :)

  4. I send all my clients personal hand written thank you notes. I think it's a reminder to them of how much I appreciate their business. It also allows me to let them know that I look forward to future projects with them.

In my personal life, I love getting and I love giving. Although, your post is a great reminder to me that I must get some cards because I have a lot of people to thank here of late for all their help!

I read somewhere that Jackie O always sat down and wrote out a thank you note as soon as she came in the door. Something I should get in the habit of doing myself, instead of letting some time go by.

  5. Darling thank you notes...I love to get them and send them. Tried to enforce them with my kids...the youngest is 19 and he is pretty good about sending them (of course, I always make sure he has some in stock).
